I came to VR originally for the fun fitness apps, but I've stayed for the immersive cozy gaming. I like my games chill - so you won't see any shooters on my lists. Below are my favorite categories' top contenders IMHO (Image: A selfie of my avatar in Worlds - the only place I'm smokin' these days LOL)
Supernatural: Unreal Fitness blew me away - it was the first time EVER that I truly felt working out was a blast. And wow can it make me sweat! Fabulous music to choose from too (I found a lot of new favorite tunes - a great bonus) with gorgeous immersive settings. I love Flow! (Image: Supernatural promo shot of Flow, one of the 4 categories on offer along with Boxing, Stretching and Meditation)
Fitness Fables is a stupid name for a great app. With just the right combo of gamification and fitness, it was obviously and thoughtfully designed specifically to take advantage of VR. It goes beyond boxing or bashing targets, incorporating all sorts of movement (Image: Fitness Fables screen shot of paddling, one of the many different exercises that randomly challenge you in each session)
Starwave is similar to Flow, but set in space to thumpin' techno. Starwave keeps the workout fun and the heart rate up! (Image: Starwave promo screenshot)
In Racket Pinball, you are in the machine... You stand on the table, using a pair of rackets to keep the ball in play. Not quite as much of a true fitness app as the others, but a favorite part of my routine (Image: Racket Pinball screenshot of the Old West table)
Good 'nuff that I played more than a few times and explored them fully (but didn't keep me coming back for more for long)...
Cybrix
FitXR
I gave them a trial, but ultimately they disappointed...
Alo Moves XR
FunFitLand
Les Mills Bodycombat
Litesport Premium Membership
MarineVerse Kayaking
Exercise Your Demons
The Thrill of the Fight
Hitstream
FitFight XR: Squat Strike
Shardfall
Garden of the Sea is my all-time favorite VR title. It has everything I deem important in a cozy: treasure gathering and hoarding - makes my inner dragon happy LOL - with fun quests and moments of awesome beauty. Just the right amount of challenge for the completionist in me (Image: my screenshot of my favorite friend, with the boat I was so proud of finally figuring out how to get in the background)
Raccoon Lagoon is another great game of quests and collecting, with plenty of pretty scenery. I appreciated that I could "turn off bandits" in the settings, which kept the racoons from stealing my stuff - because stealing my treasure is just unacceptable! LOL (Image: my screenshot of a hungry llama)
Fujii was the first cozy I found - it addicted me to the genre. Fujii has some of the most gorgeous graphics in VR, where I felt completely immersed in awe. Such a great trip! (Image: my screenshot of heading to a biome)
I played Everdream Valley in early access, and had a grand time with it despite its myriad bugs when first released. I look forward to playing it again once it has shaken out some of the wrinkles (Image: my screenshot of my honeybee hives in the wildflower garden at night with owls swooping overhead. Gorgeous stuff - the screenshots really don't do these apps justice)
Good 'nuff that I played or finished (but they didn't trigger my inner completionist)...
Morels: Homestead
Umami Grove
Cookie Gardening
Little Cities
Sushi Ben
I gave them a trial, but they disappointed for one reason or another and I cannot recommend them...
Little Planet
Starship Home
Across the Valley
Relax River
Forest Farm
Gardenia VR
Stay: Forever Home
Till Tomorrow
Realms of Flow is the best meditation app currently on the market IMHO because it is so customizable. Its guided offerings have a nice mix of less-preachy meditations with as much (or little) woo-woo as you want lol. And WOW are the graphics gorgeous. (Image: Realms screenshot)
ZenVR gets an honorable mention for its paddling meditation - which set me on a quest to find kayaking or paddling apps - because what a cool thing... alas the lack thereof though lol (Image: ZenVR promo shot of paddling meditation)
I am not convinced that VR is ideal for regular meditation practice itself (because it kinda feels like cheating), but I feel VR should be an ideal platform for teaching mindfulness and all the various permutations of meditation... but nobody has nailed it yet IMHO.
Tend VR Mindfulness, which is still in early access, has the right idea, but is too buggy and underdeveloped at present (I am hopeful it gets fully developed)
Maloka, Solara One and Headspace XR: Mindfulness and Meditation all have interesting bits worth an explore (though none kept me coming back for more)
Be they too buggy or too preachy (or just ... bad lol), I recommend staying away from these...
Symphony Plus
Mezmer
Tripp: Meditation, Relaxation, Sleep
Liminal: Relax. Unwind. Engage. Explore.
Mindway-Mindfulness Meditation, Sleep, ASMR
Higher Prana
Cosmic Sugar
Guided Meditation VR
Nature Treks VR
A Fisherman's Tale is such a trippy mind-boggler... Incredibly imaginative, it takes full and best advantage of VR. Simple, yet a real challenge because you have to think outside the box - literally and figuratively lol. I loved the first, but I wasn't a fan of Tale 2's mechanics (Image: screenshot of the little model that affects the larger world)
The graphics in Moss are absolutely gorgeous. And Quill, the main character was so stinkin' cute that I felt the need to find her as a mini to paint and use as a subject for my own photos. Moss is a lush and challenging adventure, as is Moss II. (You can avoid fighting if that's not your thing, which I appreciated... because that's not my thing lol)
Good 'nuff that I finished...
Waltz of the Wizard
Red Matter Collection
Floor Plan Remastered, Floor Plan 2
The Curious Tale of Stolen Pets
Down the Rabbit Hole
Did not finish or problematic for me for one reason or another...
Like Ghost Giant (which made me cry... not in a good way. A story line about severe parental depression that snuck up and smacked me around is not my choice for a chill game... Do not recommend)
Surviving Mars, Pioneer
Maskmaker
Shadow Point
The Last Clockwinder
Active Games aren't really fitness apps, but do keep you up and moving and are a great choice for play when you are trying to be less sedentary. Eleven Table Tennis feels like the real thing - the physics are spot-on. I appreciate that you can play against the AI cat and pick some cool locales to place the table.
Beat Saber is more wristy and less full-body workout than Flow, but very similar in that you bash targets with swords to the beat. It held less appeal after I found Supernatural (especially because I like the music choices there better), but it is a fun game.
All are fun active games with excellent physics...
Walkabout Mini Golf (more fun if you play with friends)
Clay Hunt VR
Fruit Ninja 2
Fruit Ninja
Loco Dojo Unleashed
I had high hope for these and was sorely disappointed...
Whitewater VR - Extreme Kayaking (so bummed: eagerly awaited and hopped on the day it released... only to find that it gave me VR sickness. Only game that has done that >.>)
MarineVerse Kayaking
Splatsplasm
What the Bat?
I am Cat
